Inspired by organic forms, Yellena James has a whimsical style that she uses to create biomorphic scapes. The fluid lines, textures, and shapes blend together to create a surreal world that seems to swirl and move but is void of scale. Looking at the environments that she has created in her art, it’s unclear whether we’reviewing microscopic life forms in a drop of water or giant flora and fauna on a Jurassic planet. Yellena also draws upon a distinct color palette, using a couple of vibrantly saturated colors that pop against other dustier shades. By adhering to this color palette, she effectively uses color to further distinguish her style. Yellena is a master of form and composition, creating beautifully fluid scapes, full of movement and wonder.
Yellena was born in Sarajevo and studied graphic design and painting at the University of Central Florida. She skillfully employs a mixture of drawing, painting, and printmaking to produce her work. Since graduating, Yellena has been showing in galleries in the US and the UK. Interestingly enough, some of her work was used on the set of the popular show, “Modern Family.”
